Prime Minister Inaugurates New CBI Headquarters in New Delhi

March 2011

Last week, the country witnessed the inauguration of the new headquarters of the Central Bureau of Investigation – India’s criminal investigation body, national security and intelligence agency.

Located at the national capital, New Delhi, the CBI Headquarters Building has been designed by Raja Aderi Consultants.

Amenities

The premises are spread over close to 7,000 sq metres and equipped with modern communication systems, advanced systems for maintaining records, fitted storage space and computerised access control along with a provision of add-on facility for new technology. Interrogation rooms, lock-ups, dormitories and conference halls are also provided at various floors.

The new CBI headquarters offer to its staff a large cafeteria which can accommodate 500 persons, separate gyms for men and women, a terrace garden and a double level basement parking for about 470 vehicles.

An advanced fire-fighting system complying with the National Building Code has been provided. There is also a well-designed Press Briefing Room and Media Lounge.
A gallery showcasing the history and land-mark achievements of the CBI is also part of the building.

Building Façade & Green Features

  • The building façade comprises primarily of energy-efficient, reflective and toughened glass, and Saint-Gobain Glass India, with its third-generation offline coated reflective glass range has facilitated this.
The toughened glass used is ST-408, a deep green glass from the Cool-Lite range. Along with a light transmission of 6 and very high solar control properties (only 10% of the external heat can penetrate the building), this glass also provides thermal insulation, owing to its low-e feature. A modern building material product that complies with ECBC standards, ST-408 is an architect’s delight.
  • The skylight of the CBI Headquarters Building has used 10 mm thick ST-150, another third generation glazing product with a greyish tinge, high light transmission properties and 25% reduction in heat ingress. This is coupled with ST-450, a blue-green series from Cool-Lite that cuts out 63% of the light – ideal for skylights. 10mm clear glass has also been used in this component of the building envelope, in a spider glazing pattern.

  • An HVAC system with power back-up facility is another feature contributing to the building’s Green status. The system can be activated and deactivated, zone-wise, depending on the occupancy at any point of time. Unique Engineers have provided the HVAC consultancy and Era Builders have done the construction honours.

  • A sewage treatment plant is installed and provisions for recycling of treated water for horticulture have been made
  • In addition, the building has integrated a rain water harvesting system and a solar water heating system.

The CBI Headquarters in New Delhi is an IGBC Green Building.

As if in sync with the expectations the country would have from a body like the Central Bureau of Investigation, the headquarters’ building is truly an iconic work of architecture, standing for a sturdy, reliable and sustainable unit.
