This World Architecture Day (WAD), we at Saint-Gobain’s Glass Business in India decided to dedicate the day to the present and future of architecture - by interacting with over 200 architectural firms pan-India, and with school students to whom we introduced the fascinating world of architecture.
With the Present Architects – Celebrating Architecture
This year, our sales team connected with more than 200 architectural firms across India, celebrating their invaluable contribution to creating strong foundations and towering skylines. With the theme “Architecture… housing for all”, we engaged the firms in making a house using popsicles. We also conducted a digital quiz (Kahoot) to introduce the new offerings in the market from Saint-Gobain. The activity helped us to create a stronger connect with our customers while making it enthralling for them as well. A little over 2000 architects took part in this campaign.
With the Future Architects – Discovering Architecture
Rome was not built in a day. Indeed, this age-old adage encapsulates the essence of our activities leading up to WAD 2019. Just as it takes architects, months and sometimes years together to bring their blueprint to life, students too need to be educated from their young age on architecture as a prospective profession. In India, regular conversations with children, more often than not, reveal them aspiring to be Engineers, Doctors, Government Administrators, Police personnel, and now with the unprecedented popularity of India's missions in the skies, even Astronauts. Seldom does one come across a young boy or girl aspiring to be an architect or an interior designer.
Catching them young
Our team reached out to a school (Saraswathi Memorial Trust) in Bengaluru (Southern Part of India and India’s Silicon Valley) and initiated discussion with high school grade students about their future aspirations; majority of them expressed that they envisioned mainstream careers and hardly anyone wanted to become an architect or a designer, primarily owing to the lack of awareness about architecture as a profession.
We then took them to an Architecture (Architecture Dialogue, Bengaluru) and Interior Design (Ace Group Architect Pvt. Ltd., Bengaluru) firm tour where they interacted with senior architects. This opportunity not only gave them a good exposure about the profession but also demonstrated how an architect makes dreams come true. The role of an architect in nation building was thus clearly reinstated. Through animated videos, they also got to see how architects make innovative designs. Finally students made some creative designs of their own using play-doh.
Towards the end of the day, we asked them again what they wished to become now. Some of them expressed their interest in becoming architects, a positive outcome of this entire exercise which was video graphed and can be seen as a film here.
WAD 2019 was a one-of-a-kind platform for us at Saint-Gobain India as we endeavoured to Celebrate with the present architects and Discover with the future architects. We do have a long way to go, for there are miles to go before architecture too becomes one of the most-coveted professions. But we will pursue relentlessly, because, as they say, “Rome was not built in a day”.
