The Art of Layering: Designing with Glass a Modern Indian Home

A well-designed space is one that feels curated, personal, and richly textured. In interior design, layering is the art of thoughtfully combining materials, patterns, textures, and finishes to create homes that resonate with individuality. Much like life, variety is key in interiors.

When it comes to adding depth and dimension in a space, glass and mirrors emerge as timeless elements that appear effortless, unique, and maintenance-friendly.

In this elegant 5,000 sq. ft. Surat residence, designed by Interior Designer Pinky Gandhi, founder of Area 3 Dezine, layering takes on a luminous new form. Glass serves as a primary material, not just for aesthetics but also as a practical solution to spatial and lighting challenges.

A Harmonious Living-Dining Experience

Fluted Glass Partition Dividing the Space for a Visually Connected Look.

The home sets the tone for a bright and welcoming space with the choice of a unifying neutral palette, clean-lined furniture, and warm accents that create a cohesive and grounded vibe.

To define zones without blocking light, a fluted glass partition is used between the dining and lounge areas. This smart intervention introduces texture and transparency, allowing visual connectivity while maintaining privacy where needed.

The dining area features a custom-designed LED-lit mirror that adds a touch of drama and glamour to the space, amplifying light and doubling as a decorative element.

Lacquered Glass Kitchen Shutters

Lacquered Glass Kitchen Shutters for a Sheen Look

The kitchens deserve a dose of love and practicality to support both everyday routines and entertaining activities. Here, the layout features distinct wet and dry kitchen zones — an increasingly popular design element in modern Indian homes.

The platform has been fabricated with matte-finish dado material, and to contrast and elevate the look, lacquered glass shutters in high-gloss finish have been installed across the cabinetry. Not only are these surfaces easy to clean and scratch-resistant, but they also come in a wide array of colours, creating a cooking space that is more aesthetically aligned with the rest of the home.

SGG Colormaxx Dura, the latest range of lacquered glass in a toughened variant by Saint-Gobain, enhances the kitchen with durability and seamless appeal for memorable gatherings.

The primary bedroom reflects a serene tone of beige and brown shades, where a sense of calm meets functionality. To make the space feel open yet cosy, a non-load-bearing wall was replaced with a modern glass partition, enhancing spatial perception while anchoring the room with subtle luxury.

A sliding TV unit is integrated into a metal and glass partition, cleverly concealing wiring and maximising flexibility without compromising on the room's flow. Above, the design takes a dramatic turn with a bronze-tinted mirror ceiling that introduces a touch of opulence and complements the aesthetic.

Here, in the older son's bedroom, the focal point is a custom UV-printed glass panel featuring a life-size image of cricket star Virat Kohli, a dream detail that adds energy and character.

Flanking this graphic statement panel are black tinted glass wardrobes that offer a modern storage solution. The layered mirror detailing on the headboard, paired with rich blue velvet upholstery and SS trims, brings the right amount of balance and comfort.

The Hydraulic TV Console and Mirrored Wardrobe Optimise Space

For the other kid's room, the Vastu-led design had to work around two glass façades. Here, the designer's clever solution was a hydraulic TV console placed in front of one façade, optimising space and maintaining visual continuity. A wardrobe occupies the other side seamlessly, with mirrored finishes that reflect light while expanding the perceived size of the room.
